Xiaomi Enters the Electric Vehicle Market with Its First Car, the SU7

Xiaomi, the Chinese smartphone giant, has officially unveiled its first electric vehicle, the Xiaomi SU7, at a launch event in Beijing on Tuesday. The SU7 is a sleek and futuristic-looking sedan that aims to compete with the likes of Tesla and Porsche in the high-end EV market.

The SU7 is the result of Xiaomi’s $10 billion investment in the electric vehicle sector, which the company announced in March. Xiaomi said it plans to produce 10 million vehicles in the next decade, with the SU7 electric car being the first of many models to come.

Features and Specifications

The SU7 boasts impressive features and specifications that make it stand out from the crowd. Some of the highlights include:

  • A 800 km (497 miles) range on a single charge, which is more than most EVs on the market today.
  • A 2.78 seconds acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph), which is faster than the Tesla Model S and the Porsche Taycan.
  • A dual-motor system that delivers a maximum power of 600 kW (804 hp) and a torque of 1,000 Nm (737 lb-ft).
  • A liquid-cooled battery pack that uses nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) cells, which have a higher energy density and lower cost than the lithium-ion cells used by most EVs.
  • A wireless charging feature that allows the SU7 to charge without plugging in, using a special pad that can be installed at home or in public places.
  • A smart cockpit that features a 19-inch touchscreen display, a digital instrument cluster, a head-up display, and a voice assistant that can control various functions of the car.
  • A level 4 autonomous driving system that uses 12 cameras, 13 radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and 3 lidars to navigate complex traffic scenarios and provide a safe and comfortable driving experience.
  • A 5G connectivity that enables the SU7 to access various online services, such as navigation, entertainment, social media, and remote control.

Price and Availability

The SU7 is expected to go on sale in China in the second half of 2024, with a starting price of 299,800 yuan ($46,800). Xiaomi said it will also launch the SU7 in other markets, such as Europe, India, and Southeast Asia, in the future.

The SU7 is Xiaomi’s first attempt to enter the electric vehicle market, which is dominated by established players like Tesla, Volkswagen, and Toyota. Xiaomi hopes to leverage its brand recognition, loyal fan base, and expertise in smart devices to carve out a niche in the EV industry.

Xiaomi’s co-founder and CEO, Lei Jun, said at the launch event that the SU7 is “a dream come true” for him and his team, and that he believes the SU7 will “bring a new driving experience to the world”. He also said that Xiaomi will continue to innovate and create more products that will “make everyone’s life better”.
